Writer

Who wants to become the writer, s/he simply needs to write. What it in the mind is what should be written into words. I intend to become specialist in writing instruction. The best way to do is to write as much as possible. I believe in the mind and soul of the practitioners. Practice makes perfect. I will keep writing to become the perfect writer.

We come from the far land.
We come with our experiences, cultures, and expectations.
We are here in the land of liberty.
We are here to explore, exchange, learn, and survive.
We are the new people who are not familiar with culture.
We look different, we speak differently, we are new here.
Being the international students is our transition of life.
We are new here, the people who just come.
We would like to voice.

Media Convert

Do you have a problem with conflicting from file extension?

This problem just have been happened to me recently when I was going to work on different computer station on the campus from which I normally use. Refering the the previous post, I propose one of the solution with my problem between "fix" or "go".

When choosing the techinical approach to work with it. I choose to go to http://media-convert.com/ for the online file converting.

Follow these 3 simple steps :

1. Browse for the original input file.

2. Select the output format

3. OK Accept the terms

Remember

"1-2-3 : Imput-Output-OK"

Enjoy with technical problem!

Problem with importing video

Problem with importing video

This unknown problem happened to me when I went to work on my video project at the computer lab at the School of Education. Normally, when we import the files from flipvdo folder it will be just click-and-go process. But that day, I could not tell what kind of technical problem it was with that computer station.

Illustration 1: Dialog box showing the opening video folder

I noticed one unusual signal that I haven't seen at the computer station at the BA building computer lab which is the file icons were not image-represented but rather text-represented. See illustration below.

Illustration 2: Difference of file icons representation

After choosing the files that I was going to work with, there was the pop-up window appear saying as following:

Illustration 3: Pop-up window informing the problem

This might be dealing with video format.
By the way, I had no sulution to fix this problem.
The only way to work with is either going to BA computer lab or converting the file extension from .avi to other movie file format.

Time goes.

I am telling myself that close you eyes.
Tomorrow you need to get up early.
It's now 4:21 A.M.
I need to get up by 8:45 A.M.
What I am doing until now.
I am thinking and talking to the page.
I am typing what I think.
Because of I am afraid of what I will forget my thoughts.
Write it down on the blog to keep it alive.
Now 4:24, it's 3 minutes later.
It's time to go.
Have a nice time sleeping.

When I am Keyboard Literated

#I have just realized that my keyboard typing skill is more fluently than hand writing.
#Behind the scene, have you ever realized that how many mistakes that we have done when type.
#When I type I can always go back to erase my typo mistakes as long as I wish.
#When I type, any place in the sentence can be inserted any additional ideas.
#This is what typing gives --the opportunity to correct.

Note
This what I am thinking when I write. See? What a confusing ideas with writing on the keyboard.

Line 2:
"misteake" is what I actually typed for mistake.
"when" is that word that I added.
Line3:
"wish" I didn't intended to use this word. I originally typed "want"
"typed" I just forgot that it did have to be past tense. Delete 'e' from it to be correct "type"
Line 4:
"ant" This is not dealing with any insect at all. I supposed to type "any" instead of "ant".
"applce" What a mess with my typing! I want to write " a place" not this crap.. %^!+.?

Radio Tonight

Night time is the good time to listen.
I have myself sitting with radio.
Do you know that I am listening to you?
The singers, the D.J., the station controller.
As well as other radio listeners.
When I listen to your voice, radio.
I just want you to listen to what I have heard, too.
We all like to listen to each other.
We all always voice.
You voice, I voice = we voice.

Reading comes with Writing

Last couple nights, while I had been reading the article for the presentation, I found out that reading is incorporated, especially with have movement, which is called "writing".

Usually, when I read, I just underline the key words along the way my eyes are moving through the lines. This is simple technique that almost every people do while they are reading. Not so special. I am not mention this phenomena because that I have found out the innovation in reading but I just want to remind myself and other readers that we can booster reading concentration by jotting what we have read. This could maintain the ideas of the reading text quite well.

But another warning is that "try not to write when you are on the Internet"
This distracts concentration even easier than any noises.

Turn off the computer and get back to reading and writing now, dude!

Video Sentences

Video Sentences

This project is the video capture representing ideas and thoughts by using video composition.

===========================================

Final Project: Voice of New Comers

The project that I am planning to do is the live journal composition. I have been here as a new international student, I have been through a big transition in life, especially in academic aspect. I plan to convey the experience in studying, comparing expectation and reality. In addition I will include other experience from other students whom similar to mine. The main media that I focus is voice narration by using audio recorder. Each caption will represent each paragraph of composition. Illustration will be cooperated by images and music sound will be added as the background to represent mood of each paragraph. I have found that www.freeplaymusic.com is my place to go for music files.

Presentation of the video will be mainly by voice recording. I am trying not to include my face caption video because I think that facial expression would distract audience attention from the message I am speaking. The main massage and meaning will be in the voices. The position of the video project is somewhere between traditional presentation and new media.

Primary production will start from alphabetic texts in form of composition. It will be started from draft and been through revision. Once I have got the final thesis idea and draft. I will go through audio recording by using Audacity to adjust the pitch and volume of each sentence. I guess that it probably sounds awkward and not smooth but I believe this approach is able to capture the main idea quite well. This may sound traditionally.

In additional, I also plan to insert real video into my project to make it more meaningful and interesting. There will be the interviews of other people whose experiences happened to be similar. There should be common ground among international students in this place, I believe.
Being a new comer is feeling like I am a small seed falling into the new ground. It seems to be still in the nutshell from outside appearance but inside it is so packed up. It needs to be sprung for flowering but it is now depressive to struggle through the transition. (I like these phrase!, probably I will include to the conclusion)

I will spend the Spring Break to finish up the draft and try to do the sample video. Well, I not sure that will there be many people staying on campus to interview. If I have got some, they would be the right ones who are feeling lonely and depressive from being stuck on campus. I expect the depressive emotion to my video.

Digital audio interview

Digital audio interview
  • What literacies do you practice and value? In you life? At home? in the classroom?
  • What literacies are most important to you? Why?
  • In what areas are you illiterate? Talk about an area of literacy that matters to you. Tell why.
========================================

Production

This interview audio project was conducted on week 3 - week 4 by using Audacity. Production was done by layering music that I grabbed from freeplaymusic . The introduction part was done separately and later joined into the main part by inserting in front of it. It had to be careful to place the background music under the appropriate track. This consumed time during the production.

When the final track was finished, it was saved in .wav file format. There was the technical problem to my audacity program said that it needed LAME library to handle .mp3 encoding by asking for 'lame_enc.dll' file. By browsing to audacity program folder, I could not locate the required file. Therefore I could not encode the .wav file to .mp3 by using audacity. I needed to find another way to convert the file.

Google with "wav to mp3 converter" , I found around 400,000 results for solution. Most of the solution required to download the program to convert. Suddenly, I realized that why don't I convert without downloading the program. I just simply modified the search keyword to be ""wav to mp3 online converter" Bingo! I had got media.convert.com to help me out with this problem with convenience. It took less that 5 minutes to convert the audio file from .wav to .mp3. Moreover, you can convert different input to other output which are audio files, video, presentation, document, etc. The converting audio file is reduced more than 50% from 10 MB original size.

Once I have .mp3 file ready, I choose to host my audio file on ijigg.com because it looked more user-friendly to me. It worked independently without any program to play the media. This was more advantage that other popular programs like WindowMediaPlayer or RealPlayer. I just copied the embedded code of the audio media from ijigg.com to this blog. This technology was as simple as YouTube. Audiences did not have to download the file to save somewhere in the computer and opened player program. Both file and player were bundled together and made it easy to listen or see the media. As you can see above, the player interface is simple to use.

Thank you for listening to my audio project.

Video: Writing with New Media

This is the video that I composed in the class today.

The main idea is that I try to elaborate the definition of writing from tradition writing practice. New media is the alternative tool that helps writing more powerful.

Working with Window Media Maker is simple and easy to follow. I have been using this program for while. The task is just to know how to manipulate rhetoric into the context to communicate my ideas.

The weakness of this video is that I pretty don't like the ending of the video. It's kind of dull. I would need to add more detail. Well, this is just the one-day video. I need to learn more though.

Thank you for watching my video.

Google Addiction

Google addiction: A New Addiction is Sweeping College Campuses.

I found this video after writing the previous post; Internet Addiction. Of course, I just 'Google' it up as usual! It is not surprise to see that there are many more people are addicting to some kind of the Internet products like Google. They are almost similar to me. Searching Google for all the things that are driven by curiosity.

Google again ? Oh..man!

Internet Addiction

  • Answer these questions to see how much you are the Internet addict.

    How often do you find that you stay on-line longer than you intended?
    1 = Rarely
    2 = Occasionally
    3 = Frequently
    4 = Often
    5 = Always

    How often do you neglect household chores to spend more time on-line?
    1 = Rarely
    2 = Occasionally
    3 = Frequently
    4 = Often
    5 = Always

    How often do your grades or school work suffer because of the amount of time you spend on-line?
    1 = Rarely
    2 = Occasionally
    3 = Frequently
    4 = Often
    5 = Always

    How often do you check your e-mail before something else that you need to do?
    1 = Rarely
    2 = Occasionally
    3 = Frequently
    4 = Often
    5 = Always

    How often do you find yourself saying "just a few more minutes" when on-line?
    1 = Rarely
    2 = Occasionally
    3 = Frequently
    4 = Often
    5 = Always

    ...................

    These are the questions in Internet Addiction Test (IAT) that I found it is important to assess my excessive Internet usage. For many years, I have been using the Internet in different purposes such as e-mail, downloading, browsing, and reading. It is fascinating that the Internet provides everything I want to know. It is good to know what I want to. On the other hand, having too many things to see has made me over-flood with information and become the suffering user from Internet addiction. I usually over-stay on-line, neglect duty, and become solate from social life without knowing how to control the problem.

    The Center for Internet Addiction Recovery (http://www.netaddiction.com/default.aspx) provides the resources for treating Internet addiction. I can find several self-tests for Internet addiction. For example:

    Cybersexual Addiction Quiz - A quiz to determine if you are addicted to cybersex or viewing cyberporn.

    Internet Addiction Test (IAT) - A test for online users to determine if they may be addicted to the Internet.

    Quiz for Obsessive Online Gaming - A quiz for those who might suffer from online gaming addiction.

    Quiz for Compulsive Online Gamblers - A quiz for those might suffer from compulsive online gambling.

    Quiz for Online Auction Addiction - A quiz for those who may suffer from an addiction to online auction houses.

    The Partner's Addiction Test - A test for spouses or partners of potential Internet addicts.

    The Parent-Child Addiction Test - A quiz for parents to help assess if their son or daughter may be dealing with an addiction to the Internet

    Personally, I think that Internet addicts, including myself, need to distract their attention from the on-line activities to off-line activities such as reading books, exercising, social meeting, and of course, working.

    I hope to be able to get out of the Internet hook soon. It is very difficult to be away from the Internet trap. Being too much on-line sometimes makes me sick!

New Media In My Daily Life

New Media In My Daily Life

As a technology user, I have been consuming various kinds of technology in my every day life. For example, the most popular computer communication-- the Internet. I am a kind of heavy user of the Internet. Every morning, I have to check websites for daily update (MyLeo https://leo.tamu-commerce.edu/login.aspx, Yahoo! Mail http://mail.yahoo.com, Hi5 http://totosunnyday.hi5.com) before brushing my teeth. Later in the day, I usually stick my head on various websites. The most frequent visited website is Google (http://www.google.com). This is the starting point before wandering to other websites in this cyberspace.

Some reasons for being the Internet loyalty.
  • I can't lose my identity in the cyberworld. This means that even in the Internet, I sometimes being the anonymous person but I have other identities to represent myself in other roles.
  • I need to get in touch. Nowadays, it is inevitable to communicate by using the Internet technology. This is the reason why I have several channels to contact with the world. Staying up-to-date is helpful with e-mail.
  • I can get information as I want. Search engine assists me to search information that I need in only a few seconds. Some e-books can be obtained on my most favorite free book website--http://www.englishtips.org. Paperless publication in .pdf files makes people more convenient to obtain large amount of information without limitation of space and time.
  • I can communicate universally. Who knows that the words we have published on the Internet can be read and heard in every place in the world. It is the new media that indeed give the opportunity to every people to express themselves to the rest of the world.
